Description: A workshop on identifying and addressing substance abuse among school students was conducted by Dr. Astha Dhingra. She briefed about addictive substances readily available. The session started with an Icebreaker activity, which was followed by the meaning of substance abuse, the different categories of substance and which could be addictive and very dangerous. For example, Whiteners, fevicol, pints, cough syrups, and painkillers could also be abused. The discussion was about the symptoms & behavioural changes through which such students can be identified. The first & the most important instruction given by the psychologist was to keep identity of the person confidential & hidden. Also, she suggested a few breathing exercises and ways to relax the students who could be vulnerable to such abuses. Causes of substance abuse were also informed. Teachers were advised to inform parents that they should be involved parents in relaxing & fun activities & spend quality time with the children to build a long rapport. The session was very enriching and insightful for all.
