Activity : Making a Newton Disk

Students of Class 7 performed the hands on experiment (Class room activity) of making a Newton’s Disk to explore the phenomenon of light and colors. The class was divided into 6 groups, each consisting of 4 students, who collaboratively created a circular disk painted with seven colors of the spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet), students spun the disk with the help of a motor and it appeared as white.  The main objective of the activity was to help students understand the concept of white light being composed of different colors and how they merge when in motion. By spinning the Newton’s Disk, students observed that the colored segments blended into a nearly white appearance, demonstrating the dispersion and recombination of light. The purpose of the activity was to provide hands-on learning about light’s behavior, enhance observational skills, and encourage teamwork. As an outcome, students gained practical insights into the nature of light and color composition, fostering scientific curiosity and reinforcing theoretical concepts in a fun and interactive manner.
